3 Indian Ingredients That Are Great for the Heart

So, it’s hardly surprising most of us want to eat heart-healthy foods. In light of this, we, Indian Mart, thought it would be helpful to list our favourite three Indian foods that help look after our hearts.

1. Turmeric

Tumeric has been used in Indian dishes for centuries.

It’s a bright yellow spice which isn’t just delicious; it also boasts plenty of anti-inflammatory properties- which are great for our hearts.

Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, which is where the spice gets the majority of its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. These help the lining of our blood vessels to function properly which is essential for a healthy heart.

2. Garlic

Arguably, garlic is the most famous of all the spices used in Indian cooking.

This yummy splash of flavour has proven time and again that regular consumers of garlic are less likely to suffer from cardiovascular conditions.

How?

There’s a component called Allicin in garlic that prevents the enzymes responsible for culminating the fats that clog arteries. This works wonders for preventing atherosclerosis and for lowering our blood pressure – a significant factor governing our overall heart health.

3. Lentils

There are tons of Indian based curries to enjoy, most notably Tarka dal, i.e. Lentils.

You can have this either as a side dish or savour it for your main meal.

Protein is abundant in lentils and it’s virtually fat-free – which isn’t the case with most other protein sources.

So, it’s unsurprising that people who consume lentils four times a week are 22% less likely to contract heart disease in comparison to those who don’t.
